Taxes and the 4th of July

Taxes have played a prominent role in American history. Tax law professors have posted two short articles on taxes in the Declaration of Independence and the Civil War. The Civil War prompted Congress to pass the first-ever income tax and the first-ever tax rate increase. History buffs may also want to explore the resources available at the Tax History Project.
