How to Contact the IRS about My 2002 Tax Return?

Wednesday August 10, 2005
Dear Tax Guide, Where can I find out if I filed a return for 2002? Can I still get a refund if I file now?

Dear Reader,

Yes, you can still file and get a refund. Here's what you should do.

First, call the IRS' toll-free number: 1-800-829-1040. Ask the IRS if you filed your 2002 return.

If you did file, you can request a copy of your tax return. A computer printout of your tax return is free of charge, and you will receive the printout in about 10 business days. You can also order a copy of your actual return, instead of a computer printout. There's a $39 fee to order a photocopy. Photocopies will take longer to deliver, as the IRS will need to pull your actual file and make photocopies.

If you did not file, you can ask the IRS to mail you copies of your W2s and other tax documents.

You can receive a refund if you file your tax return within 3 years of the original due date. After the 3-year deadline, your refund disappears under the statute of limitations rules. The last day to file a 2002 tax return and still get a refund is April 15, 2006.

You can find more tips for filing late tax returns as well as crucial tax laws concerning back taxes.
