IRS Provides Guidance to Hybrid Car Manufacturers

Friday January 13, 2006
The Internal Revenue Service has released some badly-needed guidance regarding the hybrid car tax credit. The guidance is 14 pages long and deals with a number of issues I have repeatedly raised in my discussions with the IRS. The short version goes like this: Car makers now have additional reporting requirements, and this should help safeguard car buyers at tax time, and prevent tax fraud among unscrupulous filers.

The IRS guidance answers a basic question I have been asking for quite awhile: How will taxpayers know the maximum dollar value of their hybrid tax credit? This is crucial, considering the complexity of calculating the credit and the phaseout amounts. The IRS has provided a short and simple solution: car manufacturers will be able to issue written documentation of the tax credit dollar amount to hybrid car buyers. And taxpayers will be okay if they rely on that documentation at tax time. Additionally, car makers will need to file quarterly reports with the IRS.

I bought a 2006 Prius in May / June 2006. What paper work do I need to submit to get the Taxcredit. I did not receive anything from the Toyota dealer related to the tax credit. Please advise.
