Thinking of Starting a Non-Profit Tax Service?

Friday May 18, 2007
The Internal Revenue Service is providing matching grants of up to $100,000 to non-profit organizations providing tax services to low income clients. Organizations can apply for grants to operate clinics that provide free or low-cost representation before the IRS or that provide outreach and education to taxpayers with limited English proficiency. There are currently 154 tax clinics around the nation, helping taxpayers resolve disputes with the IRS over audits, collections, and other appeals cases.

The deadline to apply for the grants is July 6, 2007. Grant application materials can be found in IRS Publication 3319 (PDF, 102 pages). Organizations can also view the grant information and apply online via Grants.gov by searching for funding opportunity number TREAS-GRANTS-052008-001.

The grants are administered by the Taxpayer Advocate Service, "an independent organization within the IRS that helps taxpayers resolve problems with the IRS and recommends changes to prevent taxpayer problems."
