October 15th Deadline Approaching

Tuesday September 18, 2007
Individuals have until October 15th to file their tax returns, if they haven't done so already. It's also the last day to electronically file your 2006 taxes. Here's some resources to help you finish up your return.

Use the simplest tax form you can. This will help reduce the amount of time filling out a tax return by choosing the shortest tax form for your financial situation. Here's a quick guide to choosing among the 1040EZ, 1040A and 1040 forms.

Select the best tax software for your needs. There's plenty of software choices for preparing your taxes. Here's a list of the best programs available. And a reminder: you might qualify to use tax software for free under the IRS' Free File program. Free File software is available until October 15th.

Track down missing tax documents. Are you still missing some crucial tax documents? Try calling the IRS. The tax agency has copies of your tax documents, including Form W-2 for wages and Form 1099 for interest, dividends, and other types of income. The IRS can fax or mail the documents so you can finish up your taxes.
