Deadline to File Your Tax Returns

Monday October 15, 2007
Today, October 15, is the deadline to file your personal tax returns with the IRS. Here's some last minute tips to make sure your taxes are completed accurately, safely, and filed on time.

Prepare and file your returns online. There's several Web-based tax preparation programs. Pick one of these top-rated programs, work through the various input screens, and then file your return electronically. By e-filing your return, you won't have to run to the post office.

If you have to pay the IRS, make sure you file your return today. If you wait to file, you'll end up paying the late-filing penalty of 5% per month or part of a month that the return is late. If you file today, you'll only have to pay the late-payment penalty of half a percent per month and interest of 8% per year. Basically, you'll save yourself a penalty and won't have to pay as much to the IRS.

Make sure your returns are postmarked today. If you are mailing in your tax returns, be sure that they go out in today's mail. I typically suggest that people mail their returns using certified mail or priority mail so you'll have proof of delivery. Here's a list of IRS mailing address.
