Deadline for Expatriates to File a 2007 Return

Friday June 13, 2008
US Citizens and resident aliens living abroad have until Monday, June 16th, to file a return or request an extension. People living abroad are granted a truly automatic two-month extension to file and pay their taxes. Expats can get an additional 4-month extension of time to file the return, but not to pay any tax, by mailing Form 2350 (PDF, 3 pages) to the IRS campus in Austin, TX.

Citizens living and working abroad typically qualify for the foreign earned income exclusion or the foreign tax credit. Both are very powerful tax benefits for working abroad and can help keep foreign income from being double taxed by the US and the country in which the person in working.
