Two Months Left to File for 2007

Saturday August 16, 2008
Taxpayers have until October 15th, 2008, to file their tax returns if they requested an extension. Here's some quick resources to help you finish up with your taxes:

Which tax form to use? If you can, use the simpler 1040-EZ or 1040-A forms. These are easier to fill out by hand.

Use top-rated tax prep software. Tax software includes interview-style questions to help uncover deductions or tax credits that apply to your specific financial situation. Plus, the software will fill out all the forms and schedules you need based on the input you provide.

File for the rebate, even if you don't have any taxable income. Retirees, who might not have any taxable income, could get up to $300 in rebates from Uncle Sam.

Consider hiring a tax accountant. Generally speaking, people who file later in the year have more complicated financial situations. Some tax offices close or have reduced hours after April 15th, so you may need to call around to find someone who's open. And you'll want to make an appointment sooner than later, as things get really busy the closer we get to Oct. 15th.
