When is Interest Tax Deductible?

By February 12, 2009

Most of the times, interest is not tax-deductible. But there are a few notable exceptions.

Mortgage interest is a well-known tax break for homeowners. Even points (pre-paid mortgage interest) can be deductible as well.

Student loan interest is deductible, up to $2,500 per year. There are income limitations that apply to this deduction.

Investment interest expenses may be deductible, such as interest paid on margin loans used to purchase stocks, bonds and other investments.
