Looking for a way to pay your federal taxes online? The Treasury runs an online bill pay service called Electronic Federal Tax Payment System (EFTPS). This secure Web site allows you to schedule payments from your checking account for all types of income tax payments, whether paying your 2008 taxes, setting up estimated payments for 2009, or paying off a balance from a previous year. Many tax software programs also let you schedule payments inside the software itself.

You can also pay using a credit card, but you'll need to use a third-party payment provider. Pay 1040 and Official Payments enable you to pay federal and state tax bills online using a credit card. Both companies add a 2.49% service charge to the transaction.
