Filing your tax return after the April 15th deadline might not be a huge deal breaker. The important thing is to file a tax return and to pay, if you have a balance due. Penalties are imposed only when a person has an unpaid balance after April 15th, so if you have a refund, the IRS won't impose any penalties for filing late.
The best advice is to start working on your tax return. There's plenty of top-notch software available to guide you through filing out the various forms and schedules you'll need. And you can still e-file too, or use one of the free Web-based software programs that are part of the Free File Alliance. E-file and Free File services are available through October 15, 2009.
If you find you need extra help, many local tax accountants stay open year-round.
