Where to Get Free Tax Help?

Monday October 5, 2009

Do have a complicated tax situation, but cannot afford to hire an accountant? There's a number of non-profit and government resources that will prepare your tax return or assist you in resolving a tax issue.

Free tax preparation at an IRS local office

Lower-income individuals can have their tax returns prepared at no-cost at a local taxpayer assistance center. You may want to visit the local office first to schedule your appointment, as slots can fill up quickly.

Tax Clinics

Universities and non-profits manage tax clinics in many cities across the country, and provide assistance to lower-income individuals who need help with an audit, tax debts, or resolving a problem with the IRS.

Taxpayer Advocate

The National Taxpayer Advocate provides assistance to any taxpayer who has been unable to resolve problems with the IRS through normal channels. I've found them to be extremely helpful in tracking down refunds that have been unreasonably delayed. A local advocate can be contacted by calling, toll-free, 1-877-777-4778.
