When to Expect Your Federal Tax Refund

By January 24, 2012

Follow me on:

The Internal Revenue Service issues federal tax refunds on a schedule, which they call the "refund cycle." For tax returns accepted by the IRS by 11 am on Wednesday, the IRS issue refunds the following week, with direct deposits issued on Wednesdays and checks mailed out on Fridays. By accepted, we mean that the IRS's computers have acknowledged the receipt of an electronically filed return.

The IRS publishes their refund schedule, also called the refund cycle chart, in Publication 2043, which is partially reprinted below:

Refunds can be delayed for various reasons, for example if the IRS needs to review a tax return. The IRS also advises that direct deposits may take up to five days to be fully deposited into your bank account. With paper checks, there will be additional wait time as the check travels through the postal system.

As a general rule, I dislike the direct deposit program offered by the IRS, because direct deposits do not offer the same security features as checks. An incorrect entry for your bank's routing number or account number can result in a permanently lost refund. The National Taxpayer Advocate, in her 2011 Annual Report to Congress, reported that "The IRS has detailed procedures for replacing stolen paper refund checks, but it has limited procedures for replacing stolen electronic refunds. The taxpayer's ultimate recourse is to pursue legal action against the thief, with no help from the IRS. This lack of procedures causes disparate treatment of taxpayers who elect to receive their refunds electronically compared to those who choose to receive paper checks" (page 420, found in this pdf file.)

Related: how to check the status of your refund.

Update: The IRS is experiencing delays in issuing federal tax refunds. On January 26, 2012, the IRS issued a Quick Alert stating that "some taxpayers will receive refunds approximately one week later than initial projections" caused by "fine-tuning IRS systems to adjust for new safeguards put in place this tax season to provide stronger protection against refund fraud." These programming changes to the IRS's computer systems may result in delayed refunds. The IRS further stated that "90 percent of refunds are provided within 21 days." I suspect that refunds will eventually resume their normal delivery once the IRS gets their computer systems up to speed. Questions about the status of a refund can be directed to the IRS hotline at 1-800-829-1040.

Update: The IRS has posted information about the refund delays on their Web site, 2012 Tax Season Refund Frequently Asked Questions. This is the agency's standard response to inquiries on why a federal tax refund might be late or delayed. Among the points that the IRS wants to get across are:

  • "refund time frames provided by the "Where's My Refund?" IRS2Go smartphone application (app) and tax providers are projected time frames and are subject to revision. Many different factors can affect the timing of the refund after the IRS receives the return for processing."
  • "Also, keep in mind that the date "Where's My Refund" provides is the estimated date the IRS will issue the refund, not the date the taxpayer will get the refund. It may take up to five additional days for the financial institution to post the refund to your account, or for mail delivery...."
  • "Refund dates change in "Where's My Refund" as a tax return moves through IRS processing. A date change is not a sign of a problem for a person's tax return...."
  • "The estimated refund date initially provided via "Where's My Refund" is just that, an estimate based on a best-case scenario...."
  • "calling the IRS won't do anything to speed your refund...."
  • "the IRS cannot guarantee a taxpayer will get their refund on a certain date...."
  • "IRS also periodically adjusts its technology systems during the filing season, which can also factor into short refund delays...."
  • "the IRS cautions taxpayers not to tie major financial decisions to the receipt of their tax refund by a specific date...."

Hopefully the IRS can get their computer systems and Where's My Refund tool to be more accurate and communicative too.

This Direct Deposit Refund Cycle and the IRS is a big Lie. Myself and my neice both did our 2011 income tax return through H&R Block on Jan. 16, 2012 and they in turn filed it with the IRS on Jan.17,2012. Both of our 2011 income tax returns where accepted by the IRS on Jan. 17, 2012. Our refund cycle dates are (If accepted before 11:00a.m. on Jan. 18, 2012 “Which They WERE”) today Jan. 25, 2012. Well, No Direct Deposit will be done on either of our accounts today. We called the IRS to see what the problem is. The IRS told us both ,we had no problems with our returns and that our deposits are schedule to be deposited into our accounts on Jan. 30, 2012. We also called the H&R Block 1-800 number. They told us that the IRS has had a POWER OUTAGE and that, that has effected over 60,000 peoples income tax deposits and that they were re-scheduled. So, When we heard that, I phoned the IRS and they told me that, they haven’t heard of anything about that and they don’t know why H&R Block people are saying that and as, for as the Direct Deposit Refund Cycle that, that is just a projected schedule and might get your refund later even if the cycle says something different. That really sucks. MIKE F.

We did not receive our direct deposit on Jan 25th either. I assumed they only did them on fridays. Don’t know what is going on. I called the IRS and they said to expect it anytime now until Feb 4th. They are no help.

(3) Phyllis says:

I was also scheduled to get my refund on 1/25 and of course, I didn’t. Today I finally got a direct deposit date of 1/30. Why did they change from the Friday deposits? I always got my refunds on time. I’m sure the deposit date will change once again before Monday!!!

I also was suppose to get mine on the 25th and of course didn’t, I have been told many different stories and don’t know what to believe. The irs told me it could take up to 3 Weeks to process even though the irs website is telling me I should recurve it by the 31st…..I am so confused! I have never had this problem before!

I filed on the 17th accepted by 11 on 18. No dd on the 25. Are they doing Friday dd? I hope so!! Today is Friday but my wmr still says before 31. Has anyone got their refund?

Mine was filed on jan10,2012 and accepted early on Jan 17,2012 and my dd was supposed to be Jan 25th as well it’s now Friday and I didn’t get mine either:( wmr still say processing should receive by Jan 31??? Don’t understand this at all!!

(7) Melissa says:

My refund was accepted on Jan 17th by 11am and since then WMR says by Jan 31st. I was hoping maybe today but still nothing! I am so upset, my family and I are moving next Friday and need those funds to cover expenses. I hope it’s there by the 31st as they say. So much for modern technology, the IRS always seems to have some sort of problem with their system.

(8) trstg says:

I just spoke with a rep at the IRS about their sch. I had my return efile with HR block it was accept by the IRS on the 17th @9:00am. Based on the acceptance my DD should have been done on the 25th but of course it is not. WMR states it sould be by the 31st. I question the rep at the IRS about the random dates they put up on the website and of course they read a script or they have no answer for you at all. The IRS rep did say they can make deposits on any day M-F. but then again not sure how true this is either. Last year I was delayed 6 months and had to go through the Tax advocate in order for them to send me my refund. I am hoping it will hit today no later than the 31st. So frustrating

My fed return was accepted on the 17th and like a lot of you I was to receive dd on the 25th.
I checked the where’s my refund shortly after i filed to see if it correlated with the cycle and it doesn’t – the IRS site and phone recording says Feb 7th.
I hate waiting for money it seems like forever!!! Still grateful though.

So along with many of your other fine Americans. I too got right in and filed my taxes.. Did it on the 17th accepted on the 18th. I used Jackons Hewitt paid for the AR and was given anytime from 1/27 to 2/3.. I checked at IRS WMR and it said 2/7 for a refund I asked JH and they said call the FMS or Tax Offset Office maybe they were the reason and holding my refund up. I called the TOPS office or FMS has my SSN tagged for someones child support debt in OKLAHOMA. 3 days of conviencing Oklahoma I was the real person who the SSN belonged to 2 police reports, 1 in my state half the country away from Oklahoma and 1 in Oklahoma. Countless calls to TOPS, calls to IRS, and to many calls to count now to Oklahoma Child Support. I am still no where and guess who won’t tell you a thing. Yup our IRS offices. Neither of the 5 offices I have delt with work directly with each other. IRS accountanting has allt he information correct and all refunds go through FMS to have a name and ssn match in order for states requesting refunds to recieve the request. If there is no match the refund is sent on. Meanwhile my SSN was changed Wednesday and to date TOPS/FMS has yet to get the information in their system correctly. FMS told me Tuesday that the IRS will not be sending any refunds until 1/28. JH tells me today that the IRS is delaying 70% of the refunds and that getting your refund through AR is out of their hands. So here I and a million others like myself who pay for fastere refunds get screwed again. I say do away with the faster refund options and delete half the tax preperation programs. I say make a government that each office can interface with each other and get updates done promptely instead of weaks and months later. I bet if we were politicians or high level white house officials we sure wouldn’t have these issues.

Just off the phone with IRS advanced accounting. There was no power outage. On the 17th when the IRS started taking refunds there was a technical difficulty. Bascially in lame terms a system overload, too much information at one time. Like I said earlier I filed the 17th, JH said IRS got my refund the 18th not true they got my refund the 19th. My date from the representative is the 2/3 the wmr said 2/7 (that is acutally for paper checks) Sit back and breath Americans we shall get our monies in due time one way or another.. :)

I just finished reading an article that they implemented some new fraud measures which caused about 60% of tax returns filed early to be delayed by approximately one week. I too filed mine expecting a DD date of 01/25/2012 and the WMR states 1/31/2012…

just thought I would share that info…

I too did my taxes on 1/17/12, and was supposed to have it Direct Deposited on 1/25/12, and have yet to see it deposited yet. wmr says on the 31st i should get it….only time will tell.

January 28, 2012 at 11:29 pm
(16) Kim says:

I like many others apparently filed my refund on the 17th. My DD stated that it would be there on 01/25/12 with the latest date being 01/31/12. I received my state DD on 01/25/12. Many of the people I work with also filed theirs on the 17th and theirs did not get accepted until late on the 18th so theirs says that the check will be DD on 02/01/12 with no later than 02/07/12. What I think is awful is that some people were really depending on that 25th DD for many reasons and our government again did not keep a promise!!!

(17) jessica says:

I believe the IRS should have emailed or updated their site to reflect a mistake on their part. I was supposed to get my refund 1/25, then it said BY 1/31….now it says I’m scheduled for a DD on 2/1. This is so lame when you put off bills thinking you’ll be able to pay them on time or fix your car so it’s not out of registration and illegal (again) and you EXPECT your refund…and then don’t get it.

The IRS should have updated their site, list of refund expectation dates, etc…or just a general update to the public that there was a glitch and things may be delayed (even if only by a day). I know many people, like myself, rely on their tax refund to help them out financially.

an electronic dd isn’t bad or unsafe they will not make a deposit if the info on the card name and such things as your b day don’t match so even when making a era of account number or routing numbers they will not dd the money unless the card account is in the same name as the tax return… if this was to happen they will send your refund back to the irs and i guess they should send you a notice asking where to send your refund again…ill dd any day and i filed jan 20 and was accepted the21st of Jan 2012….. my tax act says i will have a dd on 2-1-2012 but wmr say BY keyword 2-7-12 im so confused there are so many people out of work who need there refunds back for bills im not blaming the irs or mad just wish i knew an exact date hopefully itll come Wednesday

January 30, 2012 at 7:59 pm
(22) William Perez says:

cash boo, I respectfully disagree. The banks are supposed to match the name on the direct deposit to the name on the account, but all too often the banks will not perform that simple cross check. Once the direct deposit goes through, it is quite a chore to recover that money.

I filed on the 18th after 11 a.m., was told 2/1 by H&R Block, but the WMR tells me I have been accepted and due date on 2/7. I also thought this was only me until now. It’s now 2/1, 1:12 a.m E.S.T. and no refund on my emerald advance card. I planned to move with this money and told my current Land lord I would be out by the end of the week and now, not only will I not be out by the end of the week but I may not get my refund until next wednesday. Already paid off and scheduled to transfer all utilities on Friday, of course with money I expected to have replaced by my tax refund today 2/1. So now I’m broke, with transfer orders in on my utilities, landlord expecting to retain control of her property, and to top it all off, the family van broke down 2 days ago, need $250 to fix it!!!! This delay has royally eff-ed me and my family!

Hello everyone. My takes were accepted also on Jan 18 with h&r block. I was given a Jan 25 date. Then I received a email from h&r block saying feb 1. Checked emerald card no money dd. Called the IRS number and it said up to six weeks. I then called h&r bloc today and the tax person said there was a glitch in the system on the Jan 18 date. Unbelievable! Why did I pay 300 dollars to get this refund! Has anyone gotten their refund yet? This is very frustrating considering they tell u at h&r block u pay more money to get the refund in two weeks.

(41) C says:

IRS is delaying efilers especially turbo tax because of a fraud ring that used turbo tax to file false returns. They stole about 2 million dollars filing tax returns with other peoples soc., and dead peoples soc. So now everybody is suspect that uses Turbo tax and filed early. Aint life grand!

(42) Amy says:

I filed online w/H & R and my return was accepted at 1057A on 1/17. Return was simple standard deduction with pretty much no credits. Was told DD would be 1/25. Received my State Refund on 1/25 but that’s it. Then online status said “received by 1/31″ but still nothing. Now it simply says “has been accepted and is being processed”. This is BS. The IRS charges late penalties to any person paying them late so they should be accountable to pay us a late fee. I budgeted my son’s birthday and other things based on the fact that I was getting my refund 8 days ago. Now I’m up a creek and going to be late on bills. My name matches my accounts perfectly I should have gotten it. Now I can’t even get through to a real person at the IRS to find out what the hold up is. At least have the decency to let a person know what’s going on.

(43) Kia says:

My return was accepted on the 22nd and I was given a date on WMR that I should receive it by of the 7th. I checked WMR yesterday evening and it then said that they could not locate my info. I just checked it this morning and it now says that my DD is scheduled for Monday the 6th and if it’s not in my account by the 11th to check with my bank before calling the IRS. So maybe they have started to get the ball rolling.

(44) Paula C. says:

I, too, have been experiencing an unexpected delay with my refund. I e-Filed with TurboTax on 1/21 and was given a projected DD date of 2/1. That didn’t happen … but, checking as of now – I was given an actual DD date on the WMR feature on IRS.gov, for 2/6.

It may be worth waiting it out or checking the IRS site, this morning. I’ve even seen news reports about the delay.

My boyfriend e-filed his taxes on the 24th of January, he got his state DD last week but no federal DD. The IRS says he will get it on Tuesday the 7th of February. Everyone I know that did their taxes after the 25th got their DD this past friday. If you filed between the 17th and 25th of January, there was a system upgrade and the DD are delayed. We should get ours this week. It really sucks that we have to wait but I guess that is life.

I feel like they are playing games and the reps tells everyone different things.. Also I checked WMR just a few minutes ago and it is saying being accepted and being processed should receive in six weeks. Some body please tell me what is going on.

(63) Kia says:

I had a DD date of the 6th but being that banks do not post items on Saturday or Sunday nights, in order for the funds to be in my account Monday, they would have to post it Friday night. So I figured I would check Saturday morning to see if it had gone through that night, and it was there. My 2012 headache is over, but I’m hoping something happens soon for those still waiting.

(64) CyntMoniMcc says:

Just in case people haven’t been following the news…the IRS changed systems AFTER the 1st day to file so everyone that filed prior to Jan 26th has a week delay on their projected due date. They were telling people it was a power outage and finally the news broke that the IRS flubbed up and didn’t implement new security features til AFTER the season already started. Most tax websites automatically changed the date to reflect the week delay. I filed on the 21st and my date was ALWAYS the 7th…which is almost three weeks instead of the usual two. So whatever date you were originally told, calculate another week and you should have it. Even if you don’t, you can’t contact the IRS til AFTER 6 weeks from your projected mail out/dd date. Hope this helps..

I sure hope so because we could REALLY use the $$ right now. Good luck all!

I honestly think the govt is just in so much debt that they are f*cked. WHY ISSUE A CHART IF YOU DON’T FOLLOW IT? Why update your system the first day you start accepting returns. Confused and Rachel,

I have the same problem. My refund was sent and accepted by the IRS on 2/2/12. As of today, the WMR site still did not have any info on my refund. I called the IRS and spoke to 2 different people who could not find any record of my return at all. I even have the confirmation number they sent to H&R Block and they still couldn’t find it and told me to have H&R Block send it again. I called H&R Block and they told me I could not efile again since they are showing it as accepted and would have to print and mail my return. I am still in the middle of this mess currently but you may want to call the IRS and become pro-active in this.

I filed my taxes with taxact on 02/02/2012 and it showed accepted by the IRS on 02/02/2012. It shows a dd date of 02/15. The “where’s your refund” still to date shows nothing. The 800 number also states it has no information. :( I called on Friday and a rep stated they had gotten it but that was all she could tell me. I keep reading all these horror stories about people who have filed weeks or more ago and still have not gotten the refund or its still delayed. I’ve also read where people stated the IRS is saying the never got there tax returns!! And they have have the confirmations from the efile programs they used. Im in the same boat as everyone and really need my return. Does anyone else have a similar issue with a dd of 02/15 with so possible answers??

My refund was filed on 1/24 accepted on 1/25 and once it had shown up on WMR site , It has been at 2/14 the whole time. Today is the 13th and still no change. Not desperate for the money but still kind of frustrating nonetheless.

Mine was e filed on the 26th and accepted 27 Jan. Then the first DD date on wmr said feb 8th. Then a few days, it changed to Feb14. Then it changed to the 6 week thing. Today, I checked, and no refund in my bank. this is the most irritating tax year ever. I called, and got a recording that said the same thing the WMR site says.. Whats going on??

February 14, 2012 at 1:00 pm
(91) Cristina says:

I efiled on 1/20 and was given a projected date of 02/01. I then received an email on the 27th from H & R Block letting me know of a processing delay. I checked the WMR and it said 02/21. 3 days later it said 02/07.

In fact, it still says 02/07 and it is now the 14th. WTF. No answers when I call. No answers online. What is happening here? I have 2 confirmation emails stating that my return has been accepted and WMR telling me to only contact after the 7th. It’s after the 7th and I’m contacting…yet I’m not getting any answers.

@repodavenc, you are a jerk! Nice that you got your money but did you really feel like a big man rubbing everyone’s nose in it? My stepson had an EZ return and got his one week after filing. We filed one day later on the 27th of Jan and we are still waiting. Don’t think it’s a big deal? Consider my husband just lost his job and this will be our only income until he finds work, and there are NO JOBS. Our phone is about to be shut off…no phone, no way for employers to call us for jobs. No way to pay our car payment…no car, no way to GO to work. So, do you feel better rubbing salt in an already painful wound? Enjoy your money. What goes around comes around.

(99) Penny Mitchell says:

Well i filed my taxes electronically on 02/01/2012 and within 2 hours i was told it was accepted by the irs. I checked the nWMR system for 1 wks and to no avail did not have any info on Feb 7,2012 it told me to call a 1800 number with a message code nervous i called and was told it was a generic message they have my refund and i could expect a return date of 02/21/2012 now i filed my oldests son the same day 10 mins before mine and he has gotten his return as of 02/15/2012. So i go in to check my status again on the website and the site is down i call the 1800 number and i was told that due to system glitches and system overload that my refund has been pushed back to 02/29/2012 so as of this i get on to yes check the status again and now it says as long as i owe no taxes i should revieve my return within 6 weeks from the accepted day. So once again i wait 15 minutes on hold and call the irs again to get a different answer yet again i was now told that due to the overload and system changes that some ppls return was pushed or delayed by 1 week and others by 2 weeks and mine was one that delayed 2 wks i have done nothing wrong and taxes look get but there is still the delay. Really come on now ppl i hope it is going smoother for eveyone else. Has anyone else experienced this same problem?

I filed on January19 with H & R Block. Got an email from them that the return was accepted later that day.The expected direct deposit date was February 6. Today is February 17 and no money. I have talked with B of A (my bank) and H & R no one knows what’s going on. The “where’s my refund” web site says they deposited my money on February 8. I’m nervous now!

@leynna, I’m pretty sure you wouldn’t have that attitude if you were on the same boat as the majority of us….

Ours was accepted on 2/8 shortly after midnight. At first our expected dd date was set to 2/17 then 2/14. Just checked where’s my refund and it changed back to 2/17 and says its processing. Let’s just say I’m not holding my breath.

IRS has issued an FAQ on the refund delays, http://www.irs.gov/newsroom/article/0,,id=254102,00.html, but I wish their talking points would have been more forthcoming about the exact details behind the delays.

I have not received my DD fed refund and I filed efile with my tax preparer on Feb 6th.I was told it should be on or before the 17 of feb.I have never had problems before. What is going on?Is the gov out of reserve funds and not letting us taxpayers know?Something is definitely not right.

I don’t believe we will be seeing our refunds on 02/21. Being the IRS was closed 02/20. I am also very frustrated. I was accepted on 02/02. Still haven’t seen my refund and the IRS told me it was processing check back on 02/23 if I’ve not received. Ugh

(112) Larry says:

Don’t expect much help or info from the internal ripoff service. I filed and was accepted on 1/25/2012 , and have been given two different dates. It’s now a full week past the last date given and still nothing. I understand what a task it is for them to get this done, on this scale, but they shouldn’t get our hopes up with a deposit date that they can’t make.

I filed on my refund was accepted on 1/22/2012, and I was advised it would be mailed on 2/10/2012. I rthen checked again and it states it was wailed on that date. today is 2/22/2012 and i still have not received andything. Now I am not sure if it is the IRS or the mail, but somebody is fabricating the truth.

They never promised anything, they are projections. And I am sorry, but having to wait 2 weeks for your refund is not bad at all, it use to be at least 6-8 weeks.

(115) Marc says:

I e-filed on 1/22/2012, irs stated they mailed my check on 2/10/2012, I even called irs on 2/17/2012 to verify it was mailed and it still has not arrived as of 2/23/2012. It is appearing their funds might be limited and they are taking from peter to pay paul this year. Looks like a crap shoot when we will get our refunds. As long as they pay up is all that matters in the end. But this waiting really hurts the pocket book in this economy…

Anyone receive their refund on the 29th per the refund cycle chart? That should have been my refund date for a 2/20/12 accepted date, but still nothing posted to TPG (Santa Barbara Bank), the bank Turbotax uses for direct deposits. IRS ‘Where’s my refund’ said 2/28, so I thought it would show by the 29th for sure…I was wrong

(121) Rach says:

I did my taxes with Turbo Tax on Jan. 24th and it was accepted on Jan. 25th. At first we were told it would be DD on Feb. 7 then Feb. 14 then Feb. 21. Now it is saying nothing but being processed. I have called once this whole time and was told that our return was sent to an error facility and just came out that day (Feb. 21st) and we may receive it in one or two weeks. Its funny to me that if that were true they would have gave us some kind of date, but nothing except being processed. We need our money as much as anyone else, no I take that back, we our entitled to our money as much as everyone else is. If you owe taxes the Government will charge you interest out the A**. Shouldn’t it be the same for us little people. Shouldn’t they owe some kind of interest for our refunds if it takes longer than a month. I see no difference. From this day on I will never and I repeat NEVER depend, count on, or even expect our refund because this is what happens. Good luck to all you individuals out there who are still seeking your refund we know EXACTLY how you all are feeling now. Sure doesn’t give me much faith in our Government or our country. It’s like they are never there for you when you need them.

Ok…. So the IRS accepted my return on 1/22/2012 , and I was advised it was mailed on 2/10/2012. Today is 3/5/2012 , and I have not received anything. I am not sure what is going on, I guess I should just assume that it is lost. This has been the worst experience I have ever had with filing taxes and waiting for information. If I owed and they were going to take it, then just say that, but this waiting and no one knows anything is rediculous. SOMEONE HAS TO KNOW SOMETHING!!!!

My Federal return was accepted on Feb 25th. The Where’s My Refund site said it should be Direct Deposited ‘by March 6, 2012′. The chart on the IRS website said on March 7, 2012. Neither dates are correct….as I have yet to recieve the Direct Deposit. What gets me angrier, is my ex-husband was scheduled to get his today, and HE DID!!!

I was expecting my refund march 13, just for the heck of it i checked the site again and now it says march 6, Well Duh today to the 9th and no money yet.. But the federal government sure didnt waste time taking out my federal income taxed today from my paycheck..

The WMR Says our refund WAS deposited on mar. 7th. Todays the 9th no deposit. And no idea when well get. Can understand delays fine. But why lie and say its already been deposited, and still leave us with no idea, WTF!!

I filed my return on February 21 electronically with my tax preparer. I checked the following week, it said I would receive my money on 3-3. The on 3-3 I checked it said 3-13. Guess what, it’s 3-13 and no money. So I checked AGAIN and it says…BEING PROCESSED! Are they kidding me. This is ridiculous. I have this weird feeling about this whole ordeal. I used to file, and the following week-there’s my money. WTF!!!!!

March 14, 2012 at 11:34 am
(130) ACE says:

I filed 3/1 and today is supposed to be my DD day…well like many of my fellow tax payers, I’m still waiting for it to hit my account. I checked the status on “wheres my refund” and now its been pushed back to 4/24 or is “being processed.” Some sites say the IRS only updates their system once a week and if you check it more than once it may give you different results for your DD date.I’d just be more comfortable if they said, “wait 6 months” instead of giving me a “projected date” thats only projected for NEVER.

(133) Jennifer says:

I filed on 1/17 and was originally given a dd date of 1/25. That date changed to 2/21, 2/14, then to 2/7. It stayed on 2/7 up until this am when it again changed to 3/20. This year I was able to claim my kids instead of my ex and also I was able to take an education credit for going back to school. When I called the IRS on 1/29 they said that my return was being reviewed and that i would receive a letter in the mail which I did and it stated that my return was being reviewed for claiming the kids and the education credit. I was to wait 45 days and to call back the IRS. Today is the 45th day and I called back also because my DD date changed on WMR. The lady was extremly rude and told me that I would be receiving another notice. WTH…They never requested any additional information and my return was clean as ever. My refund was under $6,000 and I just dont understand what the hold up is. I do understand that there are alot of people out there that love to screw over the government but why should us honest people have to pay for it. I will post again once I receive the second letter.

March 15, 2012 at 5:01 pm
(134) Deborah says:

Guess reading these doesn’t bode well for me. My return was received 3/14. By the chart I was expecting to get it 3/21. WMR says 4/3. How do you find out if your return was received by 11:00am? My email from Turbo Tax just has the date, no time. Although that is a moot point I guess since all of these people are having extreme delays.

March 16, 2012 at 10:54 pm
(135) Renny says:

To the one who filed in Jan and is being reviewed, so am I. Do not feel sad, I have a tax advocate working with me; I have had to send everything
child’s birth certificate; divorce decree from years ago; W2/ information from employer on official letter had paper in addition to the W2, and the list goes on.

I have already received my 2 letters and they say the same thing; however, the second time they requested more information. My tax advocate is even getting upset because she redid my taxes and got the same thing I got.

The IRS missed up on us early filers, so they just keep pushing us back on purpose playing a game of laziness instead on working over time to catch up…But, this is just my opinion.

March 18, 2012 at 4:35 pm
(136) Candi says:

I had my taxes filed on Feb. 9; it is over 5 weeks later and I have yet to receive my federal refund by direct deposit. I checked over all the info on my federal return and it’s all correct. Don’t know what to do to find out where refund check is–website hasn’t been updated since Feb. 22 and am told, “return received and is being processed.” Can’t call–I’m told not to. I believe I’m being more than patient.

March 20, 2012 at 8:15 am
(137) Jennifer says:

Candi…I would either call a tax advocate or call the IRS. You have a right to know what is going on. The IRS isn’t going to be much help but anything is worth a try. Renny…I also do believe that the IRS is being flat out lazy. Now my second letter never once asked for additional assistance and when I spoke to the tax advocate they said there was nothing that they could do for me until the IRS asked for additional information. So I am assuming that at the end of this second 45 days I lay odds that they will request additional information at that time. I checked the WMR status this am only for it to read that my return was accepted and is being processed. Which from the past couple months means that they are working on it. I am just keeping my fingers crossed that they either send me my refund or ask for whatever additional information they need. I just cant get over the fact that it would take the IRS 90 days to verify my children and verify my school credit. I triple checked my W2′s income and everything is perfect to a T so I am still dumbfounded as to why my refund is being held in the first place. Seems like everyone I have spoke to said that they also filed before January 26 and some even filed later and are having the same issue as me. our government royally sucks!!!!

(138) Kuntal Debnath says:

I filled my fed tax return on Jan 29th 2012. Per “Where’s My Refund” I was supposed to get my refund on Feb 14th and later on that moved to Feb 21st. Still now I didn’t got my return and its showing now ” Your Tax Return has been received and is being processed”….Don’t know what’s happening out there ? I did received my State Tax Return on 03/01 which as per time…….

(139) Twana says:

The IRS deleted a large # of returns. I filed1/24 informed on 2/8 it was deleted. Submitted paper return and still no return. Got a tax advocate because this was their mistake so why should I have to wait for my money. I did eveything right.

March 22, 2012 at 5:58 am
(140) Mai says:

Well. Mah problem with my refund is no different than any of the taxpayers whose had or having their refund delayed due to some sort of processing failures that the IRS just too greedy and busy ful*Ingram up to fix. Rich azz governments delays those with a refund of over $3k (this is what I think). And, if you keep checking your refund status – oh heck yeah, “this might be some fraud who’s trying to access someone’s esles info. Let’s delay it further, see how many hits I get” is probably the way the greedy big govs set their system. My husband’s refund had no problem making its deposit into his bank. Said, told, and done within that time frame of 7 – 10 days. His refund was only a little over $1k. He’d filed a couple of days before January ended. But I just filed March10 and system said April 17. Got my state 3days after it was accepted. But, my federal, I was expecting over $5k because of EIC. I thought last year’s and previous year’s the IRS were strict and pretty smart and cautious. This year they’re just lazy and replacing technology to do their job. Idiots.

(142) Dave says:

My refund was accepted on the 12th of Feb. and I was given a projected date of the 22nd of Feb. The IRS gave an alert that their were delays. I was then given a projected date of the 6th of March. When the 6th came the date changed to the 13th of March. When the 13th came, yet a new date was given of the 20th of March. The 20th came and no refund and no new date. The refund tool just says it has been received and is being processed. Here it is April 1st and still no check! I have never had this kind of experience before, but I’ll say this … come November I will vote for Mickey Mouse before I’ll vote for that joke of a president!

(143) Hockey Fan says:

Don’t feel bad. My husband and I filed on February 2 with our tax preparer. Pretty early, right? Wrong. Someone had already used his ss# on a federal and state return in January. The state return was processed right away and the thief did receive a direct deposit on our behalf. Luckily, the fake federal was stopped in time. How distressing. This is the one time of year that we actually have “extra” money and we are still waiting on both. The federal says it will be dd tomorrow. I am crossing my fingers that holds true.

April 3, 2012 at 2:51 am
(144) Dave says:

I’m crossing my fingers for you too … how do you speak with the IRS, because every number I call redirects me to the automated where’s my refund tool. Is there a way that I am overlooking to talk to a real person with the IRS? April 3rd and still no refund!

April 4, 2012 at 10:41 am
(145) Hockey fan says:

Talked to IRS identity theft division. We can expect a LETTER from them sometime in JUNE. Anyone that had this happen to them, don’t expect a refund until possibly summertime. SO UNFAIR. We have to wait for something that is rightfully ours. We have to put all of our plans on hold. So much for having some “extra” money anytime soon. Oh well, get over it I guess : (

April 7, 2012 at 9:05 am
(146) Luckbug says:

It’s frustrating to wait for your refund but Dave, what does the president have to do with your refund. If anything, your probably realized a bigger refund because of his tax cuts. You can rag on Obama for many things, but to call him out because your refund is late?

Grow up!

April 7, 2012 at 11:27 pm
(147) Dave says:

Grow up? Are you so shallow as to think that this situation is not a reflection of the Obama administration? I thought this website was for people with a mutual concern for their refunds not being sent on time. How Dare You! You know what my refund is $0 … That is what I have received so far. As far as the numbers promised … not much. But I am a citizen of the US and what little refund I’m getting is mine! You can take your “We are the World” mentality an crawl back into the hole you came out of. You’re trashing someone who thought that Obama had the vision, but obviously he doesn’t. I have a right to state my mind and you’re not my mother …. so why don’t you mind your own business and you grow up LUCKBUG. nuff said…

like most everyone else here, i havent received my refund either. i tried to e-file but it was rejected. called the irs and was told my ss# was already used but i would have to mail in my forms and i would still get a refund. i printed and mailed that day. i checked the irs website a few weeks later and it had a payment date of April 3. On april 3, there was no money. it is now April 10 and still no money. i checked the irs website again and now all it says is that its processing and it doesnt list a date. i cant get ahold of anyone with the irs now either. im beginning to think im not getting my money, at least not any time soon. good thing i wasnt relying on it! but its still damn frustrating!

April 10, 2012 at 5:29 pm
(151) Heather Mary says:

I had my taxes prepared and they were e-filed 2/21/2012. WMR still says they are being processed and to wait 6 weeks. After hours of internet search I came up with a phone # to call a live person at IRS. After a 20 minute hold time I got an agent who gave me NO direct answers as to why my refund was delayed but told me a paper check was mailed 4/4/2012! I asked him why the IRS would do that when I specifically asked for DD, again he gave no explanation. Those people are not very helpful:( Don’t mean to be so impatient but I have 3 young children and my husband and I claim no exemptions all year long in order to get a large tax return to pay off major bills. This is a heavy burden to have to wait so long when friends and neighbors get theirs in 8 days or so.

April 10, 2012 at 10:36 pm
(152) Dave says:

I googled the local IRS and called them … their automated system said they take no phone calls but walk ins are welcome. I walked in, took a number and waited. The IRS tool still has no date, but the guy there gave me a range and a reasonable explanation why my refund was taking so long. He said were my tax return had errors and was ammended that it threw it into a prolonged pool and that I should receive my refund between the 9th to the 16th. I felt somewhat relieved because he said everything checked out on the ammended return and that it is good to go, but I’m still waiting. However, it made sense because ammended returns take 8-12 weeks to be processed. I hope this might help at least some of my fellow citizens.

(155) UNHAPPY says:

I had ID theft so this year they issued a 6 digit pin which I did not receive. I called Feb 2 to request on they made a referral and stated it would take 10 business days and I should receive it in the mail. A month later no pin. Had to request ANOTHER referral because supposedly they misspelled my city, I should of still received it cause the zip was correct. March 2 called again so I had to wait 10 business days. Day 13 I called and they lady said I should receive it anyway, never received it. I finally was able to get it over the phone I don’t know what happened they probably never mailed it. So finally I filed my Taxes April 2, got a date of April 17, now my status says Your refund has been received and it’s being processed.
Why issue a pin number if it’s still went into review. So now I have no idea when I should receive my tax refund.

(156) got mine took says:

After a long waiting period. I got informed by irs that I owed for a previous year. I filed my taxes March 4th it is now April 16th, note wheres my refund says its being processed and if accurate I will receive my refund in 6wks. I just got off the phone with an irs agent and they said I owed something for 2008 and my refund went toward that. So you can’t go off of what wheres my refund because that is not close to being accurate. You may be waiting until its time to file again, not knowing the irs already has took your money.

(158) Dave says:

…and of course, today is the 17th and no refund. I went back down to my local IRS office today. A different worker was there. I heard a totally different story than what I was told before. For one thing, they had a PO Box as my address that wasn’t mine. She told me also that it was rejected and that is all that it was saying. She had no idea how the other guy could tell me that my refund would be in the 9th to the 16th. She told me that I needed to bring my signed tax return and my W2 in and she would mail it for me. She also said that it showed that I’ve been drawing unemployment, and I haven’t. Dear God! Do these people have a clue what they are doing? She said I should receive my refund within 6 to 8 weeks. Yeah Right!?

I file on feb 3 accepted on feb 4 dd day was feb was feb 24 that came and went and nothing, so i called and they told me it was under review that it would be up to 60 days (which would put it at May 9) to wait in a letter so i got my letter april 2 it was dated april 2 so i called and was told that it was under review but they didn’t find anything wrong and that it could be released any time or it could take up to 45 more days, so i guess they are going to drag it out the whole 45 day because i still have not seen a dd yet so it will probably so it is looking like may 17 before i will get mine IF THAN

Last year we filed our 2010 taxes as soon as we had all of our paperwork gathered, sometime in February. We didn’t get our refund until September 23, 2011.

This year, we filed via H&R Block home software again and the IRS accepted our return January 29, 2012. Here it is, nearly the end of April and still no money. This year, contrary to last, we have not received any explanation via mail as to why this is happening.

I’m starting to think our government is broke. I mean, two years in a row of this delayed crap. You have got to be kidding me!

(173) CTgirl says:

My husband and I have been using H&R Block to file our taxes electronically for years now. However this year we had to file by papers because supposedly the IRS said someone else has used my SS # to file taxes. I think thats just an excuse now to delay our refund even more. We filed on March 1st, and IRS accepted our return on March 5, 2012 and initially it said on their website that we would get our refund by April 24, 2012. Well a day after April 24,2012, nothing and since then it says “your tax return has been received and is being processed”. We are getting very upset as we have two little ones and much in debt and really waiting on this refund to help us out.

My taxes were accepted on March 1st, I received my State refund about a month later but my Federal refund I still have not received in the mail. And its now May 4th, 2 months now. I really need this money to pay some debt off.

(175) Ellen Yale says:

This whole situation is due to a direct order from Obama. He has hired a ton of new agents, with orders to hold onto the money and delay as much as possible, even for his voting base, those with EIC. He thinks we are all fools. Keeping a refund even for another week or two gives them more interest.

Keep voting for Obama and his tax nazis and cheats!

(176) angrytaxpayer says:

I filed my standard tax return on February 1 2012, was supposed to receive it by the end of that month… never happened… then was supposed to be deposited in the middle of march, never happened, then again on my birthday April 3rd. got a tax advocate cause I’ve already lost my car. My house insurance is coming up in 4 months which will be may 29… As of today 5/5/2012 my federal tax return still has not arrived with the help of a tax advocate. I’m so angry about this cause I added in 10 dollars a week extra on federal just so we could have a good return and be able to catch up on bills or savings. Well that did no good at all, So I guess our taxes will be kept by the government and we will be out what ever the return is. Wondering if I can get an attorney and request the Federal Government to pay the legal fees plus what they owe me and interest on top of it… plus get my car back for me and pay my house insurance that will laps if it dont hurry and get here. I grossed 7,000 dollars last year. My Gosh give me my tax return and stop squeezing the life out of the American people who pay your pay check every monthk!!!

Feeling your pain. I filed on March 17th, had some name info problems due to last year’s preparer. Fixed them and had it accepted four days later. It is now May 11th and still no direct deposit. I’m thinking the government has run out of money. We may never get our returns, or maybe we will – for christmas.

(179) Len says:

I e-filed my return on 3/28 with TurboTax (which I’ve used every filing season) and it was accepted on 3/29, I was scheduled to receive my DD on 4/11, but nothing. Did my mom’s on the same day, and she received her refund the date I was supposed to get mine. A week later I went to WMR and was told there was a delay in processing my return and to call (800) 829-0582 ext 362, and the rep told me that my DD was rejected by my bank, and I should check with my bank for the error, and my refund will be processed in the form of a check, should receive it atleast 3 weeks (making it week ending 5/4). Called my bank’s ACH department and was told by the supervisor there was never a deposit for my account from the IRS. Waited until 5/10 to call the IRS again, and was told the last rep misinformed me, my deposit was never released to my bank. It was being held… held for what? Rep wasn’t sure, but to check back on 5/29 I should receive a letter in the mail by then. Entailing what? Rep wasn’t sure!
I am really disappointed in the IRS, and myself for putting so much confidence in this return, hoping it will relieve my financial stress.

(184) James says:

Filed around March 15. Always file a paper return with a paper check refund. Typically about 5-6 weeks from the date I mailed in previous years. This year it has been at least 8-9 weeks and have received NOTHING. Finally broke down to check their site and it just says “it has been received and is being processed.” I think this year I will adjust my witholdings and claim 5 or 10 exemptions. I would rather owe them on April 15th than to have these crooks hijacking my money for months.

Don’t expect it any time soon. The same thing happened to us. We were told we can expect a LETTER sometime in June. Not the refund. I have no idea how long it will take after my letter comes. So distressing. You need to call the identify theft division. They actually answer the phone. I don’t have the number right now. Good luck!

(194) hockey lover says:

You have to stay on the IRS!!! I was promised a letter with the case numer and a contact name within 90 days. Keep in mind, a letter. Not the actual refund. The letter didn’t come. I called again today about it. Now they want another 30 days to get the letter out to me. My advice is to mark your calendar and keep calling if you don’t receive what they promise you. Otherwise, you won’t get anywhere with them. Taxpayer dollars hard at work.

(195) TxSteve says:

My wife and I attempted to file in mid Feb via electronic. Failed, called and was told someone else used my wife’s SSN. Told we needed to complete forms and mail. We did. Took the IRS two weeks to receive. Called in March told it would take 90 days for case worker. Called in May told it was going to take another 90 days. I can live with the wait… what sucks is the lack of information. When calling all you get after sitting on hold for sooo long is someone that reads the same online screen you can read. “We have your form and processing” that’s it. No other news, no way to escalate, no nothing. Think it’s time to find a lawyer.. this is crap.

This is the first time since I was 17 years old that I have ever had to wait this long to get my refund. Wow, thumbs up to our great government, love it, served it and constantly screwed by it. A tax if refunded is your own money, paid on gas, milk, and taxes we dont even see added to our bills etc… What we should all be pissed about is the fact that if we owned them money back we would have had it removed from paychecks, and late fees accessed plus % penalty. So keeping that in mind Filed Jan 17, 2013 still no refund my calls to the IRS founded issues dealing with the home credit repayment which I was told restarted the process Mar 9, 2013 now over 8 weeks still no refund. We all have issues and money problems and looking at your refund request they can tell. But these aint the old days nope there wont be no boston tea party because we cant stick together your all afraid of the government.
