When to Expect Your Federal Tax Refund

By , About.com Guide   January 24, 2012

Follow me on:

The Internal Revenue Service issues federal tax refunds on a schedule, which they call the "refund cycle." For tax returns accepted by the IRS by 11 am on Wednesday, the IRS issue refunds the following week, with direct deposits issued on Wednesdays and checks mailed out on Fridays. By accepted, we mean that the IRS's computers have acknowledged the receipt of an electronically filed return.

The IRS publishes their refund schedule, also called the refund cycle chart, in Publication 2043, which is partially reprinted below:

Refunds can be delayed for various reasons, for example if the IRS needs to review a tax return. The IRS also advises that direct deposits may take up to five days to be fully deposited into your bank account. With paper checks, there will be additional wait time as the check travels through the postal system.

As a general rule, I dislike the direct deposit program offered by the IRS, because direct deposits do not offer the same security features as checks. An incorrect entry for your bank's routing number or account number can result in a permanently lost refund. The National Taxpayer Advocate, in her 2011 Annual Report to Congress, reported that "The IRS has detailed procedures for replacing stolen paper refund checks, but it has limited procedures for replacing stolen electronic refunds. The taxpayer's ultimate recourse is to pursue legal action against the thief, with no help from the IRS. This lack of procedures causes disparate treatment of taxpayers who elect to receive their refunds electronically compared to those who choose to receive paper checks" (page 420, found in this pdf file.)

Related: how to check the status of your refund.

Update: The IRS is experiencing delays in issuing federal tax refunds. On January 26, 2012, the IRS issued a Quick Alert stating that "some taxpayers will receive refunds approximately one week later than initial projections" caused by "fine-tuning IRS systems to adjust for new safeguards put in place this tax season to provide stronger protection against refund fraud." These programming changes to the IRS's computer systems may result in delayed refunds. The IRS further stated that "90 percent of refunds are provided within 21 days." I suspect that refunds will eventually resume their normal delivery once the IRS gets their computer systems up to speed. Questions about the status of a refund can be directed to the IRS hotline at 1-800-829-1040.

Update: The IRS has posted information about the refund delays on their Web site, 2012 Tax Season Refund Frequently Asked Questions. This is the agency's standard response to inquiries on why a federal tax refund might be late or delayed. Among the points that the IRS wants to get across are:

  • "refund time frames provided by the "Where's My Refund?" IRS2Go smartphone application (app) and tax providers are projected time frames and are subject to revision. Many different factors can affect the timing of the refund after the IRS receives the return for processing."
  • "Also, keep in mind that the date "Where's My Refund" provides is the estimated date the IRS will issue the refund, not the date the taxpayer will get the refund. It may take up to five additional days for the financial institution to post the refund to your account, or for mail delivery...."
  • "Refund dates change in "Where's My Refund" as a tax return moves through IRS processing. A date change is not a sign of a problem for a person's tax return...."
  • "The estimated refund date initially provided via "Where's My Refund" is just that, an estimate based on a best-case scenario...."
  • "calling the IRS won't do anything to speed your refund...."
  • "the IRS cannot guarantee a taxpayer will get their refund on a certain date...."
  • "IRS also periodically adjusts its technology systems during the filing season, which can also factor into short refund delays...."
  • "the IRS cautions taxpayers not to tie major financial decisions to the receipt of their tax refund by a specific date...."

Hopefully the IRS can get their computer systems and Where's My Refund tool to be more accurate and communicative too.

This Direct Deposit Refund Cycle and the IRS is a big Lie. Myself and my neice both did our 2011 income tax return through H&R Block on Jan. 16, 2012 and they in turn filed it with the IRS on Jan.17,2012. Both of our 2011 income tax returns where accepted by the IRS on Jan. 17, 2012. Our refund cycle dates are (If accepted before 11:00a.m. on Jan. 18, 2012 “Which They WERE”) today Jan. 25, 2012. Well, No Direct Deposit will be done on either of our accounts today. We called the IRS to see what the problem is. The IRS told us both ,we had no problems with our returns and that our deposits are schedule to be deposited into our accounts on Jan. 30, 2012. We also called the H&R Block 1-800 number. They told us that the IRS has had a POWER OUTAGE and that, that has effected over 60,000 peoples income tax deposits and that they were re-scheduled. So, When we heard that, I phoned the IRS and they told me that, they haven’t heard of anything about that and they don’t know why H&R Block people are saying that and as, for as the Direct Deposit Refund Cycle that, that is just a projected schedule and might get your refund later even if the cycle says something different. That really sucks. MIKE F.

We did not receive our direct deposit on Jan 25th either. I assumed they only did them on fridays. Don’t know what is going on. I called the IRS and they said to expect it anytime now until Feb 4th. They are no help.

I was also scheduled to get my refund on 1/25 and of course, I didn’t. Today I finally got a direct deposit date of 1/30. Why did they change from the Friday deposits? I always got my refunds on time. I’m sure the deposit date will change once again before Monday!!!

I also was suppose to get mine on the 25th and of course didn’t, I have been told many different stories and don’t know what to believe. The irs told me it could take up to 3 Weeks to process even though the irs website is telling me I should recurve it by the 31st…..I am so confused! I have never had this problem before!

I filed on the 17th accepted by 11 on 18. No dd on the 25. Are they doing Friday dd? I hope so!! Today is Friday but my wmr still says before 31. Has anyone got their refund?

Mine was filed on jan10,2012 and accepted early on Jan 17,2012 and my dd was supposed to be Jan 25th as well it’s now Friday and I didn’t get mine either:( wmr still say processing should receive by Jan 31??? Don’t understand this at all!!

(7) Melissa says:

My refund was accepted on Jan 17th by 11am and since then WMR says by Jan 31st. I was hoping maybe today but still nothing! I am so upset, my family and I are moving next Friday and need those funds to cover expenses. I hope it’s there by the 31st as they say. So much for modern technology, the IRS always seems to have some sort of problem with their system.

(8) trstg says:

I just spoke with a rep at the IRS about their sch. I had my return efile with HR block it was accept by the IRS on the 17th @9:00am. Based on the acceptance my DD should have been done on the 25th but of course it is not. WMR states it sould be by the 31st. I question the rep at the IRS about the random dates they put up on the website and of course they read a script or they have no answer for you at all. The IRS rep did say they can make deposits on any day M-F. but then again not sure how true this is either. Last year I was delayed 6 months and had to go through the Tax advocate in order for them to send me my refund. I am hoping it will hit today no later than the 31st. So frustrating

My fed return was accepted on the 17th and like a lot of you I was to receive dd on the 25th.
NOPE! SUPER LAME.
I checked the where’s my refund shortly after i filed to see if it correlated with the cycle and it doesn’t – the IRS site and phone recording says Feb 7th.
I hate waiting for money it seems like forever!!! Still grateful though.

So along with many of your other fine Americans. I too got right in and filed my taxes.. Did it on the 17th accepted on the 18th. I used Jackons Hewitt paid for the AR and was given anytime from 1/27 to 2/3.. I checked at IRS WMR and it said 2/7 for a refund I asked JH and they said call the FMS or Tax Offset Office maybe they were the reason and holding my refund up. I called the TOPS office or FMS has my SSN tagged for someones child support debt in OKLAHOMA. 3 days of conviencing Oklahoma I was the real person who the SSN belonged to 2 police reports, 1 in my state half the country away from Oklahoma and 1 in Oklahoma. Countless calls to TOPS, calls to IRS, and to many calls to count now to Oklahoma Child Support. I am still no where and guess who won’t tell you a thing. Yup our IRS offices. Neither of the 5 offices I have delt with work directly with each other. IRS accountanting has allt he information correct and all refunds go through FMS to have a name and ssn match in order for states requesting refunds to recieve the request. If there is no match the refund is sent on. Meanwhile my SSN was changed Wednesday and to date TOPS/FMS has yet to get the information in their system correctly. FMS told me Tuesday that the IRS will not be sending any refunds until 1/28. JH tells me today that the IRS is delaying 70% of the refunds and that getting your refund through AR is out of their hands. So here I and a million others like myself who pay for fastere refunds get screwed again. I say do away with the faster refund options and delete half the tax preperation programs. I say make a government that each office can interface with each other and get updates done promptely instead of weaks and months later. I bet if we were politicians or high level white house officials we sure wouldn’t have these issues.

(12) amanda says:

Just off the phone with IRS advanced accounting. There was no power outage. On the 17th when the IRS started taking refunds there was a technical difficulty. Bascially in lame terms a system overload, too much information at one time. Like I said earlier I filed the 17th, JH said IRS got my refund the 18th not true they got my refund the 19th. My date from the representative is the 2/3 the wmr said 2/7 (that is acutally for paper checks) Sit back and breath Americans we shall get our monies in due time one way or another.. :)

(14) Roberta says:

I just finished reading an article that they implemented some new fraud measures which caused about 60% of tax returns filed early to be delayed by approximately one week. I too filed mine expecting a DD date of 01/25/2012 and the WMR states 1/31/2012…

just thought I would share that info…

I too did my taxes on 1/17/12, and was supposed to have it Direct Deposited on 1/25/12, and have yet to see it deposited yet. wmr says on the 31st i should get it….only time will tell.

January 28, 2012 at 11:29 pm
(16) Kim says:

I like many others apparently filed my refund on the 17th. My DD stated that it would be there on 01/25/12 with the latest date being 01/31/12. I received my state DD on 01/25/12. Many of the people I work with also filed theirs on the 17th and theirs did not get accepted until late on the 18th so theirs says that the check will be DD on 02/01/12 with no later than 02/07/12. What I think is awful is that some people were really depending on that 25th DD for many reasons and our government again did not keep a promise!!!

January 29, 2012 at 11:17 am
(17) jessica says:

I believe the IRS should have emailed or updated their site to reflect a mistake on their part. I was supposed to get my refund 1/25, then it said BY 1/31….now it says I’m scheduled for a DD on 2/1. This is so lame when you put off bills thinking you’ll be able to pay them on time or fix your car so it’s not out of registration and illegal (again) and you EXPECT your refund…and then don’t get it.

The IRS should have updated their site, list of refund expectation dates, etc…or just a general update to the public that there was a glitch and things may be delayed (even if only by a day). I know many people, like myself, rely on their tax refund to help them out financially.

(21) cash boo says:

an electronic dd isn’t bad or unsafe they will not make a deposit if the info on the card name and such things as your b day don’t match so even when making a era of account number or routing numbers they will not dd the money unless the card account is in the same name as the tax return… if this was to happen they will send your refund back to the irs and i guess they should send you a notice asking where to send your refund again…ill dd any day and i filed jan 20 and was accepted the21st of Jan 2012….. my tax act says i will have a dd on 2-1-2012 but wmr say BY keyword 2-7-12 im so confused there are so many people out of work who need there refunds back for bills im not blaming the irs or mad just wish i knew an exact date hopefully itll come Wednesday

January 30, 2012 at 7:59 pm
(22) William Perez says:

cash boo, I respectfully disagree. The banks are supposed to match the name on the direct deposit to the name on the account, but all too often the banks will not perform that simple cross check. Once the direct deposit goes through, it is quite a chore to recover that money.

I filed on the 18th after 11 a.m., was told 2/1 by H&R Block, but the WMR tells me I have been accepted and due date on 2/7. I also thought this was only me until now. It’s now 2/1, 1:12 a.m E.S.T. and no refund on my emerald advance card. I planned to move with this money and told my current Land lord I would be out by the end of the week and now, not only will I not be out by the end of the week but I may not get my refund until next wednesday. Already paid off and scheduled to transfer all utilities on Friday, of course with money I expected to have replaced by my tax refund today 2/1. So now I’m broke, with transfer orders in on my utilities, landlord expecting to retain control of her property, and to top it all off, the family van broke down 2 days ago, need $250 to fix it!!!! This delay has royally eff-ed me and my family!

Hello everyone. My takes were accepted also on Jan 18 with h&r block. I was given a Jan 25 date. Then I received a email from h&r block saying feb 1. Checked emerald card no money dd. Called the IRS number and it said up to six weeks. I then called h&r bloc today and the tax person said there was a glitch in the system on the Jan 18 date. Unbelievable! Why did I pay 300 dollars to get this refund! Has anyone gotten their refund yet? This is very frustrating considering they tell u at h&r block u pay more money to get the refund in two weeks.

I only know of one person who received their refund today as scheduled. The other 6 people that all filed and had their returns accepted at the same time are all in the same boat as me. WMR states I should receive it by Feb 7 but the cycle states it should have been direct deposited today.

I called the IRS and they told me yesterday that I am scheduled for DD on Feb. 3rd and I called my bank and it was confirmed and WMR was updated and it said the same thing. After waiting forever on the phone the lady told me that It could take up to 3 weeks from the 25th and maybe even longer because mine has been accepted but not processed and also because they are checking into fraud on the majority of returns?!? I don’t understand they couldn’t give me a date to expect it even thou when I go to wheres my refund it says by Feb 14th whats going on here? I need my return asap!

(41) C says:

IRS is delaying efilers especially turbo tax because of a fraud ring that used turbo tax to file false returns. They stole about 2 million dollars filing tax returns with other peoples soc., and dead peoples soc. So now everybody is suspect that uses Turbo tax and filed early. Aint life grand!

(42) Amy says:

I filed online w/H & R and my return was accepted at 1057A on 1/17. Return was simple standard deduction with pretty much no credits. Was told DD would be 1/25. Received my State Refund on 1/25 but that’s it. Then online status said “received by 1/31″ but still nothing. Now it simply says “has been accepted and is being processed”. This is BS. The IRS charges late penalties to any person paying them late so they should be accountable to pay us a late fee. I budgeted my son’s birthday and other things based on the fact that I was getting my refund 8 days ago. Now I’m up a creek and going to be late on bills. My name matches my accounts perfectly I should have gotten it. Now I can’t even get through to a real person at the IRS to find out what the hold up is. At least have the decency to let a person know what’s going on.

(43) Kia says:

My return was accepted on the 22nd and I was given a date on WMR that I should receive it by of the 7th. I checked WMR yesterday evening and it then said that they could not locate my info. I just checked it this morning and it now says that my DD is scheduled for Monday the 6th and if it’s not in my account by the 11th to check with my bank before calling the IRS. So maybe they have started to get the ball rolling.

(44) Paula C. says:

I, too, have been experiencing an unexpected delay with my refund. I e-Filed with TurboTax on 1/21 and was given a projected DD date of 2/1. That didn’t happen … but, checking as of now – I was given an actual DD date on the WMR feature on IRS.gov, for 2/6.

It may be worth waiting it out or checking the IRS site, this morning. I’ve even seen news reports about the delay.

(56) Kelly says:

My boyfriend e-filed his taxes on the 24th of January, he got his state DD last week but no federal DD. The IRS says he will get it on Tuesday the 7th of February. Everyone I know that did their taxes after the 25th got their DD this past friday. If you filed between the 17th and 25th of January, there was a system upgrade and the DD are delayed. We should get ours this week. It really sucks that we have to wait but I guess that is life.

I feel like they are playing games and the reps tells everyone different things.. (63) Kia says:

I had a DD date of the 6th but being that banks do not post items on Saturday or Sunday nights, in order for the funds to be in my account Monday, they would have to post it Friday night. So I figured I would check Saturday morning to see if it had gone through that night, and it was there. My 2012 headache is over, but I’m hoping something happens soon for those still waiting.

(64) CyntMoniMcc says:

Just in case people haven’t been following the news…the IRS changed systems AFTER the 1st day to file so everyone that filed prior to Jan 26th has a week delay on their projected due date. They were telling people it was a power outage and finally the news broke that the IRS flubbed up and didn’t implement new security features til AFTER the season already started. Most tax websites automatically changed the date to reflect the week delay. I filed on the 21st and my date was ALWAYS the 7th…which is almost three weeks instead of the usual two. So whatever date you were originally told, calculate another week and you should have it. Even if you don’t, you can’t contact the IRS til AFTER 6 weeks from your projected mail out/dd date. Hope this helps..

On 2/3 I checked wmr again and it had changed to 2/7. So it is now 3am 2/7, and my dd has not hit yet. I am going back to bed hoping it will be there when I get up in the morning. I sure hope so because we could REALLY use the $$ right now. Good luck all!

I honestly think the govt is just in so much debt that they are f*cked. WHY ISSUE A CHART IF YOU DON’T FOLLOW IT? Why update your system the first day you start accepting returns. Not really but still!

Confused and Rachel,

I have the same problem. My refund was sent and accepted by the IRS on 2/2/12. As of today, the WMR site still did not have any info on my refund. I called the IRS and spoke to 2 different people who could not find any record of my return at all. I even have the confirmation number they sent to H&R Block and they still couldn’t find it and told me to have H&R Block send it again. I called H&R Block and they told me I could not efile again since they are showing it as accepted and would have to print and mail my return. I am still in the middle of this mess currently but you may want to call the IRS and become pro-active in this.

I filed my taxes with taxact on 02/02/2012 and it showed accepted by the IRS on 02/02/2012. It shows a dd date of 02/15. The “where’s your refund” still to date shows nothing. The 800 number also states it has no information. :( I called on Friday and a rep stated they had gotten it but that was all she could tell me. I keep reading all these horror stories about people who have filed weeks or more ago and still have not gotten the refund or its still delayed. I’ve also read where people stated the IRS is saying the never got there tax returns!! And they have have the confirmations from the efile programs they used. Im in the same boat as everyone and really need my return. Does anyone else have a similar issue with a dd of 02/15 with so possible answers??

My refund was filed on 1/24 accepted on 1/25 and once it had shown up on WMR site , It has been at 2/14 the whole time. Today is the 13th and still no change. Not desperate for the money but still kind of frustrating nonetheless.

Mine was e filed on the 26th and accepted 27 Jan. Then the first DD date on wmr said feb 8th. Then a few days, it changed to Feb14. Then it changed to the 6 week thing. (91) Cristina says:

I efiled on 1/20 and was given a projected date of 02/01. I then received an email on the 27th from H & R Block letting me know of a processing delay. I checked the WMR and it said 02/21. 3 days later it said 02/07.

In fact, it still says 02/07 and it is now the 14th. WTF. No answers when I call. No answers online. What is happening here? I have 2 confirmation emails stating that my return has been accepted and WMR telling me to only contact after the 7th. It’s after the 7th and I’m contacting…yet I’m not getting any answers.

Can ANYONE PLEASE TELL US WHAT IS GOING ON?

(92) MIchelle says:

@repodavenc, you are a jerk! Nice that you got your money but did you really feel like a big man rubbing everyone’s nose in it? My stepson had an EZ return and got his one week after filing. We filed one day later on the 27th of Jan and we are still waiting. Don’t think it’s a big deal? Consider my husband just lost his job and this will be our only income until he finds work, and there are NO JOBS. Our phone is about to be shut off…no phone, no way for employers to call us for jobs. No way to pay our car payment…no car, no way to GO to work. So, do you feel better rubbing salt in an already painful wound? Enjoy your money. What goes around comes around.

He would not even take my info to look up my return. I have never had this many issues with a tax return! Now I have no Idea when I will get my return!!

(99) Penny Mitchell says:

Well i filed my taxes electronically on 02/01/2012 and within 2 hours i was told it was accepted by the irs. I checked the nWMR system for 1 wks and to no avail did not have any info on Feb 7,2012 it told me to call a 1800 number with a message code nervous i called and was told it was a generic message they have my refund and i could expect a return date of 02/21/2012 now i filed my oldests son the same day 10 mins before mine and he has gotten his return as of 02/15/2012. So i go in to check my status again on the website and the site is down i call the 1800 number and i was told that due to system glitches and system overload that my refund has been pushed back to 02/29/2012 so as of this i get on to yes check the status again and now it says as long as i owe no taxes i should revieve my return within 6 weeks from the accepted day. So once again i wait 15 minutes on hold and call the irs again to get a different answer yet again i was now told that due to the overload and system changes that some ppls return was pushed or delayed by 1 week and others by 2 weeks and mine was one that delayed 2 wks i have done nothing wrong and taxes look get but there is still the delay. Really come on now ppl i hope it is going smoother for eveyone else. Has anyone else experienced this same problem?

I filed on 1/27 got accepted the same day.. said I would receive on 2/14, but I got it 2/3 !!!! Wooohoo. The cycle chart is just an “estimated date”. But really ya’ll complaining? Lucky your even getting back. There are millions of people filing.. think about it, your not the only person waiting. And stop depending on your refund. It’ll only last so long!

I filed on January19 with H & R Block. Got an email from them that the return was accepted later that day.The expected direct deposit date was February 6. Today is February 17 and no money. I have talked with B of A (my bank) and H & R no one knows what’s going on. The “where’s my refund” web site says they deposited my money on February 8. I’m nervous now!

@leynna, I’m pretty sure you wouldn’t have that attitude if you were on the same boat as the majority of us….

Ours was accepted on 2/8 shortly after midnight. At first our expected dd date was set to 2/17 then 2/14. Just checked where’s my refund and it changed back to 2/17 and says its processing. Let’s just say I’m not holding my breath.

IRS has issued an FAQ on the refund delays, http://www.irs.gov/newsroom/article/0,,id=254102,00.html, but I wish their talking points would have been more forthcoming about the exact details behind the delays.

I have not received my DD fed refund and I filed efile with my tax preparer on Feb 6th.I was told it should be on or before the 17 of feb.I have never had problems before. What is going on?Is the gov out of reserve funds and not letting us taxpayers know?Something is definitely not right.

I don’t believe we will be seeing our refunds on 02/21. Being the IRS was closed 02/20. I am also very frustrated. I was accepted on 02/02. Still haven’t seen my refund and the IRS told me it was processing check back on 02/23 if I’ve not received. Ugh

Don’t expect much help or info from the internal ripoff service. I filed and was accepted on 1/25/2012 , and have been given two different dates. It’s now a full week past the last date given and still nothing. I understand what a task it is for them to get this done, on this scale, but they shouldn’t get our hopes up with a deposit date that they can’t make.

I filed on my refund was accepted on 1/22/2012, and I was advised it would be mailed on 2/10/2012. I rthen checked again and it states it was wailed on that date. today is 2/22/2012 and i still have not received andything. Now I am not sure if it is the IRS or the mail, but somebody is fabricating the truth.

They never promised anything, they are projections. And I am sorry, but having to wait 2 weeks for your refund is not bad at all, it use to be at least 6-8 weeks.
