The final deadline for filing tax returns for the year 2011 is Monday, October, 15, 2012. Here's some tips for finishing up your tax return and sending it off to the IRS.

The Free File service will be available through October 15th. Taxpayers with adjusted gross income of $57,000 or less may qualify to use one of the tax software programs participating in Free File at no charge, although there may be fees for filing state returns.

The IRS's e-file service, available through consumer and professional tax software programs, will likewise be available through October 15th. After that time, the IRS shuts down their e-file servers for the remainder of the year.

Tax forms, instructions and other publications can be downloaded from the newly redesigned Forms & Publications page. Links to many commonly utilized forms are collected on this page.

If you're missing a W-2 or 1099 form, you can request a copy of these tax documents from the IRS. Fill out Form 4506-T, checking box 8. You can also obtain these documents from a local IRS office.

For mailing in tax returns, be sure to use the correct mailing address, which sometimes changes from year to year. Also be sure to use certified mail with return receipt so that you'll have proof that your return was filed by the deadline.
