Follow me on:

The IRS is granting additional time for taxpayers in Colorado who need to file tax returns or remit tax payments due to the severe storms.

A special deadline of December 2, 2013 applies to individuals and businesses in the following Colorado counties:

  • Adams,
  • Arapahoe,
  • Boulder,
  • Clear Creek,
  • El Paso,
  • Jefferson,
  • Larimer,
  • Logan and
  • Weld.

This additional time to file and to pay is granted automatically. Taxpayers who reside outside these counties and who are adversely impacted by the Colorado storms and  can call the IRS at 866-562-5227 to request this deadline relief be applied to their tax return or tax payment.

The IRS specifically mentioned that this deadline applies to corporate and business tax returns that were due on September 16, 2013, and to estimated tax payments that were due September 16, 2013. This would also apply to personal tax returns that would normally be due October 15, 2013. The new deadline for these returns and payment is December 2, 2013.

Taxpayers may want to learn more about how to deduct casualty losses on their return. The IRS discusses casualty losses in detail in Publication 547, Casualties, Disasters, and Thefts. There is also series of worksheets from the IRS help you inventory losses to your furnishings and property in Publication 584, Casualty, Disaster, and Theft Loss Workbook (pdf) and a similar workbook for business property, Publication 584-B (pdf).
