Quickbooks 2007 is a powerful accounting software for small and mid-size businesses. For 2007, Intuit has made several improvements to routine tasks to make Quickbooks less time-consuming.

Overall:

Quickbooks 2007 is highly recommended for small business users who need accounting software at an reasonable price. Businesses with basic accounting needs will be well served by Quickbooks Pro, which offers access to online banking and credit card transaction downloads. Businesses with more advanced accounting needs will be well served by various industry-specific versions offered in Quickbooks Premier.

New Features in Quickbooks 2007:

  • Memorized accounts for frequent transactions. Finally, Quickbooks adds a feature that has long been a staple in the Quicken software. As soon as you enter the same payee and account three times, Quickbooks will remember to associate that payee with that account. This should dramatically speed-up data entry for small businesses where the same expenses occur month after month.

  • Easier to create custom forms. Quickbooks made the forms customization feature much easier to use. You can add a company logo, change the layout of a form, and get a preview of your form all in the same place.

  • Setting up a chart of accounts during the company setup interview is more streamlined.

  • Accountants Review Copy now features a "dividing date." This allows a business to freeze all accounting transactions on or before the dividing date, while still entering new transactions after the dividing date. This change will make it easier for businesses to share their Quickbooks data with their accountants.

  • Quickbooks now converts bulk measurements into smaller measurements. Wholesale and retail businesses may find this feature a time-saver, with the ability to quickly determine how much inventory is available, and when to re-order supplies.

Personal Observations when using Quickbooks 2007:

  • I really like the interface of Quickbooks, which remains similar to the redesigned interface introduced in the 2006 version. I find the colors and layout to be intuitive.

  • The big difference between the 2006 and 2007 versions are in specific functions. Wholesalers and retailers may find the unit of measurement conversion utility a real bonus for improved reporting. E-commerce businesses will appreciate that Quickbooks now supports automated sales and payment data entry from major e-commerce sites.

  • The "dividing date" feature for the Accountant's Review Copy means that accountants will be able to take their time reviewing a company's books, while the client will be able to continue using Quickbooks for daily tasks.

  • The audit trail function is always turned on. This will make troubleshooting Quickbooks problems easier for accountants.

  • The new marketing tools in Quickbooks look interesting, but the features are geared mostly to retail businesses.

Product Versions:

  • Quickbooks Simple Start
  • Quickbooks Online
  • Quickbooks Pro
  • Quickbooks Premier (including special editions for specific industries)
  • Quickbooks Enterprise Solutions
