Alimony

Definition: Alimony is money received or paid to a former spouse under a divorce decree or separation instrument. Also called separate maintenance. If you paid or received alimony, you must use Form 1040. The person paying the alimony must also report the Social Security Number of the person to whom alimony was paid.
